How to Keep Hearing Aids Comfortable During Warm Weather

As much as we love summer weather, sometimes it can make your hearing aids a little uncomfortable. Beat the heat without sacrificing comfort or your hearing with these tips for keeping your hearing aids snug and comfy in your ears.

Why Warm Weather Makes Your Hearing Aids Uncomfortable

Heat makes things expand, so you may notice that your ear domes and other parts of the hearing aid donā€™t fit quite as neatly as they used to. Since these pieces are so small, they usually wonā€™t expand enough in the heat to make a difference in performance, but they may expand just enough to fit differently in your ear than in cooler weather.

Sweat can also be a factor. You may not realize it, but the inside of your ears have sweat glands to keep the skin cool and hydrated. Moisture in the ear canal may make the hearing aid less secure, as the canal becomes slightly more slippery with sweat.

Tips for Staying Comfortable

Your main goal is to keep your hearing aids cool and dry. This will not only make them more comfortable but also expand their lifespan, as extreme heat and moisture can cause significant problems if left unaddressed. Do this by:

  • Storing them smartly. When youā€™re not wearing your hearing aids, keep them in a cool, dry place so they can cool down.
  • Use moisture barriers. Sweatbands, hearing aid sleeves and protective covers can all help keep moisture off your hearing aids, so they wonā€™t feel as slick or insecure in your ears.
  • Take breaks from the heat. Give your hearing aids a chance to contract in a cooler environment, such as an air-conditioned building or with a fan.

Another way you can combat the discomfort that comes with warm weather is to have your audiologist adjust your hearing aids with it in mind. Consider getting ear domes specifically for warm weather, and a set thatā€™s a little small in milder weather so they have room to expand when it warms up.
