We frequently say that hearing aids will bring you increased confidence, and that’s true! However, when you get your first set of hearing aids, it might take some getting used to. If you’re new to wearing hearing aids, let’s discuss ways you can increase your confidence and explore all the benefits your new hearing aids have to offer.
Understanding and Fighting Hearing Aid Stigma
There is a real stigma around hearing loss and the use of hearing aids. Perhaps, consciously or unconsciously, you are reacting to this stigma, which is hindering your confidence and ability to enjoy your new hearing aids fully.
One of the most effective ways to combat this stigma is to reframe it. Hearing aids are an essential tool, just like glasses, that enhance your well-being and ability to connect with the world around you. Modern hearing aids are small and discreet, equipped with cutting-edge technological features that effectively address your hearing loss and enhance your quality of life.
Staying Connected
Untreated hearing loss is associated with increased social isolation, as well as mental health issues (such as depression or anxiety), loss of independence and decreased safety. Often, being unable to follow conversations and frequently asking people to repeat themselves can feel embarrassing, leading one to avoid social settings and distance themselves from their loved ones.
Hearing aids drastically enhance conversations and your ability to communicate, making social settings more pleasant and fulfilling. By being more present in the conversation and feeling more capable in following along, you will naturally feel more confident.
Communication Strategies: Advocating for Yourself
While hearing aids help significantly, there will still be times when you’ll miss a part of a conversation or mishear. This is natural, but it’s always a good idea to speak up when you miss something instead of bluffing and pretending you heard.
Here are some communication strategies you can use to help you and your conversation partner have a complete, fulfilling conversation together.
- Turn toward the person speaking. Face them directly and make eye contact. Lip-reading, facial expressions and other visual cues are just as important to communication as the spoken word. Plus, body language like this signals to the speaker that they have your full attention. If they respond in kind—and they should—that undivided attention will give you a surge in confidence.
- Speak slowly and clearly. Encourage the person you’re speaking with to do the same. Enunciating can help with misheard words.
- Remind people not to shout. This stems from the stigma of hearing loss; some people may find themselves speaking louder when speaking with someone with hearing loss. Gently but firmly remind them that this isn’t necessary. In fact, shouting can distort sounds and make it harder to hear. You must speak up for yourself and state what you need.
